Mezzanine bed behind a blackened steel railing with metal mesh infill, framed by soft white window shades in a Manhattan duplex

Upper West Side Duplex Renovation

This Upper West Side duplex renovation connects two floors that once felt separate. AMPOPS designed a continuous steel band that runs through the apartment, beginning at the entry, folding into the stair, becoming the structural beams overhead, and ending as the mezzanine railing. The steel carries different finishes, from polished to patinated to raw, with warm rust tones in places. Repositioning the stair and reframing the mezzanine opened sightlines and let daylight reach the lower level. The apartment now feels larger and more connected, organized around one material idea.
